Cyprus Police Warn of Social Media Scams Involving Celebrities
The Cyprus Police have issued a warning about a rise in social media scams that use the images of well-known celebrities to deceive the public. Fraudsters are luring people into fake investment schemes by falsely claiming that famous personalities are involved.
According to the police, scammers create and circulate fake photos and videos on social media, making it appear as if celebrities are endorsing these so-called investment opportunities.
“These advertisements are designed to mislead the public. The real goal of the scammers is to trick people into handing over their money under the false pretense of investing,” the police statement reads.
Authorities urge the public to be cautious and avoid engaging with investment offers promoted in this way. They emphasize that any investments should only be made through legitimate, registered, and licensed financial institutions or trusted advisors.
Another scam has also been on the rise recently. Fraudsters are posting fake online ads claiming to be from companies based in Cyprus, offering "exclusive discounts" on products at unusually low prices.
The police warn that these too are fraudulent, aiming to steal money and personal data. Anyone encountering suspicious activity is encouraged to report it to the Cybercrime Unit at 22-808200.
