Cyprus police seize firewood for Easter bonfires
Police have intensified inspections across the island to prevent the lighting of traditional Easter bonfires known as "lambradjia." During raids in Limassol and Nicosia, stockpiles of firewood intended for these bonfires were discovered and seized.
The findings were reported to local authorities, who confiscated the wood.
As a reminder, lambradjia have been officially banned since last year. Lighting a fire that leads to a forest fire carries a penalty of up to 12 years in prison. While municipalities can make exceptions and authorize such bonfires, attempts to clearly regulate the issue have not yet received parliamentary support.
