An unusual and inspiring story has been recorded in the fire-damaged areas of Limassol. A pair of Bonelli’s eagles did not leave their territory after the devastating fires of 2025 and decided to build a nest on a burnt pine tree.

According to the Cyprus Game and Fauna Service, two chicks successfully hatched in this nest a few days ago.

This eagle species has several unique features on Cyprus:

  • Island adaptation: while eagles in other European countries usually nest on cliffs, on Cyprus, about 70% of nests are located on large pine trees.
  • Change of habits: previously, this pair preferred nesting on cliffs in the valley, but this year they chose a tree.
  • The island's only eagle: the Bonelli’s eagle is the only eagle species that breeds on Cyprus.

The Wildlife Service continues to monitor the nest and protect the area to ensure the new generation of birds grows up in safety.
