President of Cyprus Offers Condolences on the Passing of Pope Francis
President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Pope Francis, head of the Roman Catholic Church.
In a written statement, the Cypriot leader said the Christian world is mourning the loss of a spiritual guide who dedicated his life to promoting the values of social justice, love, and compassion.
“His words and actions consistently supported efforts to foster mutual understanding and cooperation among nations, religions, and denominations. He was a tireless advocate for peace and peaceful coexistence between peoples and cultures,” Christodoulides stated.
The president also recalled the honor of meeting Pope Francis at the Apostolic Palace in November 2023.
He further remembered the Pope’s visit to Cyprus in 2021, marking the 60th anniversary of the Republic’s founding.
“On behalf of the Government of the Republic of Cyprus, the people of Cyprus, and myself personally, I extend my sincere condolences to Christians around the world—especially members of the Roman Catholic Church, including our Maronite and Latin compatriots—as well as to the officials, clergy, and citizens of the Vatican,” President Christodoulides added.
Pope Francis passed away on April 21 at his residence in the Vatican. He had recently suffered from bilateral pneumonia and had been receiving treatment in hospital for an extended period.
