The President of the TRNC, Ersin Tatar, has approved the candidacy of Colombian Maria Angela Holguin Cuellar, proposed by the UN Secretary-General as his personal representative in Cyprus. The leader of the Turkish Cypriots informed Antonio Guterres of his decision yesterday evening.
The Presidency's press service reported that Maria Angela Holguin Cuellar, former Foreign Minister of Colombia and permanent representative to the UN, among other duties, has become the personal representative of the UN Secretary-General on the Cyprus issue.
According to the agreement reached with the UN Secretary-General, the Personal Representative will be appointed for a term not exceeding 6 months, and his sole responsibility will be to seek common ground between the two sides of the conflict to resume the official negotiation process.
Recall that the candidacy of the Colombian representative for the role of the UN envoy became known last week. Previously, the candidacy proposed by Antonio Guterres was approved by the Cyprus-Greek side.
