Cyprus electricity unions threaten further strike action
Trade unions representing employees of the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) have warned of a potential escalation in industrial action and have not ruled out further strikes.
In a joint statement, the unions EPOPAI, SIDIKEK, SEPAIK, and SYVAIK announced they would meet in the coming days to decide on their next steps. Workers previously held warning strikes on February 27 and March 18, each lasting several hours.
The unions are calling on independent authorities to investigate a series of decisions and actions that they believe undermine the state-run power utility and could lead to higher electricity prices for consumers.
Key issues demanding scrutiny include the licensing process for renewable energy projects and the circumstances under which the EAC invested €43 million in ETYFA, the state company responsible for the liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal at Vasilikos.
Furthermore, the unions are demanding explanations as to why the telecommunications company CyTA is being allowed to enter the energy market and who authorized the decisions behind several major energy projects on the island.
