Makariou Avenue Open to All Traffic on Weekdays
Makariou Avenue in central Nicosia is now open to all vehicles on weekdays from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., following a recent decision by the Nicosia Municipal Council.
Under the new traffic regulations, the road will remain restricted from 9:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m., allowing access only to buses, taxis, residents, and employees working in the area. Weekend rules remain unchanged — only selected vehicle types will be permitted to use the avenue.
The change applies specifically to the section of the avenue between the Lycavitos Police Station and Solomos Square.
As part of the new traffic plan, the council has also approved left turns onto Mnasiadou and Bouboulinas streets, which feature large public parking areas.
The implementation of these changes is still subject to final approval by the Chief of Police.
The council’s decision passed by majority vote. Representatives of the AKEL party, the Green Party, and the Mayor of Nicosia opposed the motion.
