An unusual incident occurred on Cyprus Airways flight CY381 from Paris to Larnaca on Monday, causing bewilderment among some passengers. The plane departed with a teddy bear found at the boarding gate without an owner.

According to passengers, the toy was brought on board by a ground staff member from Charles de Gaulle Airport, who asked if it belonged to any passenger. When no owner came forward, the senior flight attendant decided to place the teddy bear in the overhead bin instead of returning it to the gate.

One passenger expressed concern over this decision and complained to the crew, noting that having an item left in the boarding area on board could pose a potential security risk. The complaint was forwarded to the aircraft captain.

Soon, the pilot announced over the intercom that he had contacted ground services and received confirmation that the teddy bear had passed security screening and that the flight could proceed safely. The crew reassured passengers that the item was safe.

Nevertheless, the complainant doubted that, in such a short time, amid a busy airport and heightened security measures, the toy’s origin could be reliably verified. He again approached a crew member, calling the decision to leave the item on board irresponsible.

He claimed that the flight attendant responded that he could leave the plane if he felt unsafe, and allegedly later threatened to call the captain to have him removed. However, according to the passenger, this was no longer possible as the aircraft had already begun taxiing for takeoff.

The passenger noted that, in his view, it would have been much more logical to remove the unattended item than to consider returning the plane to the gate to disembark a person and remove baggage.

The incident raised questions about whether the crew’s actions complied with aviation safety standards, particularly in situations where the origin of an item left in the boarding area cannot be definitively established.
