Retail trade in Cyprus showed record growth — +9.4% in August, the highest in the EU
Retail trade in Cyprus in August 2025 increased by 9.4% compared to the same month last year, the highest figure among European Union countries, according to Eurostat and the Cyprus Statistical Service.
The sales value index in the retail sector, excluding automobiles, increased by 4.9%, while the sales volume index rose by 8.4% compared to August 2024. From January to August of this year, growth reached 6.2% in value and 7.4% in volume, indicating a steady revival of domestic demand.
Among product categories, leaders were clothing and footwear (+18.1%), food, beverages, and tobacco in specialized stores (+16.5%), as well as computer and telecommunications equipment (+9.8%). In terms of sales value, the largest growth was observed in jewelry, optics, plants, and second-hand goods (+11.9%), as well as in non-store e-commerce (+9.2%).
At the same time, fuel sales fell by 8.3%, which experts attribute to energy price volatility and reduced demand for private transport.
Economists note that such high growth reflects the recovery of consumer activity, boosted by rising household incomes and a stable labor market. However, they warn that maintaining these growth rates in the long term will be difficult without controlling inflation and energy prices.
Thus, Cyprus has confidently established itself among the EU leaders in retail sector growth, demonstrating a revival of the domestic market and positive consumption trends.
