Cyprus Team Could Win Its First Medal at Paris Olympics Today
The Cyprus team has a chance to win its first medal at the Paris Olympics on Wednesday, August 7. This milestone could have been achieved yesterday, but weather conditions caused a delay.
Due to adverse weather on Tuesday, the ILCA 7 (Laser) medal race, scheduled to take place in the Marseille harbor, was postponed.
The race in which Cypriot sailor Pavlos Kontides is competing has been rescheduled to Wednesday at 14:10 Cyprus time.
Kontides, a silver medalist from the 2012 London Olympics, is set to compete in the medal race of his fourth consecutive Olympics. He currently holds second place overall and has a strong chance of securing Cyprus's first medal, with at least a silver.
To win gold, Kontides will need to finish in the top three, hoping that the current leader, Matt Wearn, finishes in the bottom three.
It is noted that races were also canceled on Monday, resulting in athletes completing only eight races instead of the usual ten.
If weather conditions prevent the race from taking place on Wednesday, it will be rescheduled for Thursday. Should there be further delays, the final results will be based on the current standings, which would guarantee a silver medal for the Cypriot sailor.
