Cheesemakers Association: Loss of 13,000 Animals Threatens Halloumi Production in Cyprus

On February 25, 2026, the Cheesemakers Association reported that the culling of approximately 13,000 animals due to a foot-and-mouth disease outbreak in Cyprus could impact halloumi production. The statement was made by association representative Michalis Koullouros.

According to him, the disease affects both small and large livestock; both types are used in halloumi production, so the loss of animals will lead to a reduction in cheese manufacturing.

The representative noted that about 80% of milk in Cyprus is directed toward halloumi production, with milk collection for the cheese carried out across all districts of the island. If the culling campaign continues, issues with milk supply and product export may arise.

The association assured consumers that there is currently no reason to worry about the safety of Cypriot products—they remain fit for consumption. Since December, following the first case detected in Northern Cyprus, members have strengthened biosecurity measures on farms and urged producers to contact Veterinary Services with any concerns.

According to the association, all tests conducted so far have returned negative results, and the organization hopes the situation remains manageable.
