The family accuses the hospital of negligence after the death of 21-year-old Dimitriania Siapani
The tragic death of 21-year-old Dimitriania Siapani has sparked widespread public outrage in Cyprus. The young woman passed away on October 22, 2025, at Nicosia General Hospital, where she had been admitted after a sudden deterioration in her health. Her family accuses the medical staff of negligence and delayed response.
According to relatives, Dimitriania began suffering from severe headaches shortly after returning from a trip to Italy. She initially sought help at Famagusta Hospital, but despite her complaints, doctors failed to identify the cause of her illness. When her condition worsened sharply, she was transferred to Nicosia, where she was diagnosed with meningitis. The family claims the disease was detected too late to save her.
An official investigation has been launched. Investigators in Nicosia are reviewing the actions of the medical staff at both hospitals. An autopsy has been conducted, and samples have been taken for toxicological and pathological analysis to determine the exact cause of death.
The funeral took place on Sunday, October 26, at 1:00 PM at the Church of All Saints in Deryneia. Contrary to tradition, the family asked everyone attending to wear white — as a symbol of love and bright remembrance.
The case has reignited discussions about the need to strengthen quality control in Cyprus’s public healthcare system. If negligence is proven, it could lead to serious disciplinary and criminal consequences for those involved, as well as stricter medical care standards across the country.
