Storm in Cyprus Damages Fish Farms — Part of Fish Stocks Escape into the Sea

The severe weather that hit Cyprus last weekend caused significant damage to fish farms in the Liopetri area.
Strong winds and storms damaged sea cages, resulting in sea bass and sea bream escaping into the sea, mostly small sizes (from 300g to 1kg).
Following the incident, fishermen began actively catching the fish in coastal areas. Part of the stock has already been recovered, but the total volume remains relatively small.
In addition to the loss of produce, the farms suffered infrastructure damage requiring urgent repairs.
The situation has caused concern: according to social media reports, some fishermen did not observe size and catch limits. Industry representatives are calling for rules to be followed and for small fish to be released to preserve the population.
The Department of Fisheries noted that such losses during heavy storms are considered expected and could have affected other farms on the island as well.
