Speeding fines in Limassol fire zones to be cancelled

The Legal Service of Cyprus intends to cancel speeding fines recorded by cameras in the areas of Limassol affected by the wildfires. This decision is based on the fact that many people were evacuating in a hurry to save their lives and property at the time.
According to the police, the violations in question occurred between July 24 and 28. During this period, mobile cameras registered speeding in areas engulfed by fire. However, police leadership concluded that such cases should be assessed individually, considering the emergency circumstances. An order has already been given to temporarily deactivate cameras in those zones and review all recorded violations.
The Legal Service supported this decision and is ready to approve the cancellation of fines if it is established that they were issued to individuals fleeing the danger zone during the fire. Final decisions on each case will be made by the Attorney General.
Thus, the authorities acknowledge that in an emergency, standard penalties may not be appropriate and are willing to consider the actual circumstances faced by residents of the affected villages.
