The film Animal, directed by Greek filmmaker Sofia Exarchou and produced with the participation of Cyprus, has been nominated for the LUX Awards 2025. This marks the first time a Greek film has been nominated for this prestigious European Parliament award.
The five films nominated for the LUX Awards 2025 were announced in the European Parliament in Strasbourg by the President of the Committee on Education and Culture.
In addition to Animal, the nominees are:
- Dagon, directed by Mati Diop (France, Senegal, Benin);
- Flow, directed by Gints Zibalds (Latvia, France, Belgium);
- Intercepted, directed by Oksana Karapovich (Canada, France, Ukraine);
- Julie Silent, directed by Leonardo van Dijl (Belgium, Sweden).
After the nominations were announced, all five films will be screened across Europe, giving audiences the chance to vote for their favorite.
Animal, a co-production of Greece, Cyprus, Austria, Romania, and Bulgaria, has already garnered several awards. It made history as the first Greek film in thirty years to win the Golden Alexander at the Thessaloniki International Film Festival.
The LUX Audience Award, presented annually by the European Parliament and the European Film Academy in collaboration with the MEDIA sub-programme of Creative Europe and the Europa Cinemas network, emphasizes the European Parliament’s commitment to culture and education, supports European cinema, and promotes cultural diversity.
