Three foreigners jumped from a balcony during a police operation in Larnaca
A large-scale operation by the Aliens and Immigration Service in Larnaca aimed at identifying foreigners residing illegally ended with a serious incident in the “Filanta” residential complex. Three men of African origin were injured after falling from a height while trying to escape from the police. One of the injured is in critical condition.
According to preliminary information, the first man tried to jump from the fourth floor into the inner courtyard of the building and sustained a severe head injury. An ambulance arrived at the scene promptly and took him to Larnaca General Hospital.
It later emerged that two more people also fell from a height and were found in the courtyard at the back of the complex. Additional ambulance crews and a Fire Service lifting platform were dispatched to evacuate them.
The police cordoned off the area around all five buildings of the complex and launched an investigation into the circumstances of the incident. According to local residents, some of the apartments in the complex had been empty for a long time and were allegedly occupied illegally.
Residents of the area said that in the morning they saw a large number of police cars and officers carrying out inspections of apartments. After that, they said, the incident involving the falls occurred.
The “Filanta” complex had previously raised concerns among the local authorities because of the poor technical and sanitary condition of the buildings. Apartment owners were repeatedly warned that the violations needed to be remedied.
The police operation covered various areas of Larnaca and was aimed at identifying foreigners illegally staying on the territory of the Republic of Cyprus. The investigation is ongoing.
