36-year-old Hakan Erkan, wanted in Turkey for fraud, detained in Larnaca
On April 7, 36-year-old Turkish citizen Hakan Erkan was detained in Larnaca, Cyprus. According to Philenews, the man is in custody, and deportation procedures from the Republic of Cyprus have been initiated against him.
Greek and Turkish media report that according to the Turkish press, Erkan was wanted for at least nine counts involving fraud, threats, and insults. Published materials suggest he posed as a "metaphysical specialist," offering services for "removing curses," energy therapy, and reuniting couples, promoting them through online ads and WhatsApp messages.
Reports indicate that some victims transferred significant sums: in one case, a 66-year-old woman transferred 63,500 Turkish Liras (approximately €1,225) to the suspect. Turkish press also points to Erkan's previous convictions, including for fraud.
Several outlets report that the man may have crossed the border from the territory of Northern Cyprus into the government-controlled areas through an unauthorized crossing point. Officially, the police confirmed the detention of a person by that name on April 7 for illegal stay and reported the start of deportation procedures; given that Turkey does not recognize the Republic of Cyprus, the return may be organized through another European country, likely Greece.
