The Forestry Department has released 18 Cypriot mouflons into the wild

The Cyprus Department of Forests announced the release of 18 mouflons from the species conservation centre in Stavros tis Psokas. The action is part of a long-term programme aimed at studying, protecting and strengthening the population of this emblematic and strictly protected Cypriot mammal.
Ten animals were equipped with special satellite transmitters to monitor their movements and behaviour after returning to the natural environment. The collected data will help scientists better understand how the mouflons use the territory and how they are affected by vegetation-management measures, including those aimed at preventing forest fires.
The department stresses that it will continue systematic efforts to preserve and strengthen the mouflon population, as well as to protect its habitat and Cyprus’s natural heritage as a whole.
