New cases of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) have been detected across 11 more livestock farms in the Livadia and Oroklini areas, Senior Veterinary Officer Sotiria Georgiadou announced on Sunday.

This brings the total number of infected units in the Republic of Cyprus to 22. The new cases involve approximately 2,000 animals in Livadia and about 200 animals across three small farms in Oroklini. With the lambing season ongoing, the total number of affected animals could reach 16,000.

On Saturday, 529,000 doses of the FMD vaccine (SAT1 serotype) arrived from the EU. Distribution to private veterinarians began Sunday night to bolster the "vaccine firewall." Georgiadou highlighted that all new cases remain within the existing surveillance zone, a positive sign for containment. Culling operations continue in Aradippou following the near-completion of work in Oroklini. Authorities urge strict adherence to biosecurity protocols and maintain a nationwide ban on livestock movement.
