Traffic on Digenis Akritas Avenue in Nicosia has been closed due to emergency works on the Kotsirkas River.
In the center of Nicosia, Cyprus, both directions of Digenis Akritas Avenue between the intersections with Makarios Avenue and Kallipoleos Street are closed for urgent works to restore the Kotsirkas (Vasilopotamos) riverbed.
The closure forces drivers to use side streets, causing significant traffic congestion and disruption throughout the capital’s road network. Access to the affected section is permitted only for residents of adjacent houses.
The site manager told Philenews that the river passes beneath the road, the foundation has become unstable, and there is a risk of the surface collapsing; therefore, a new support structure must be built.
Philenews journalists visited the work site and documented major difficulties for drivers detouring around the closed section.
According to the site manager’s estimate, partial reopening of the road to traffic is expected in the first week of December.
