In Nicosia, vandals destroyed the “olives of peace” in the Academy Park — concerns are raised about a possible political motive

In the National Forest Park of the Pedagogical Academy in Nicosia, unknown individuals damaged trees planted as part of the “Garden of Peace” project. The incident involves 21 olive trees of various Mediterranean varieties: according to a park visitor who noticed the damage on December 24, mainly the “foreign” saplings were destroyed, while the Cypriot olive remained untouched — prompting concerns about a possible political undertone.
The department confirms that a significant number of the olive trees were cut several centimeters below ground level, and this was not noticed immediately — the problem became apparent when the leaves began to dry out, even though watering continued.
The incident has already been reported to the police, but there is currently no information about suspects. The Forestry Department intends to wait: if the trees do not produce new shoots, they will be replaced.
