A new rainwater tax introduced in Nicosia
Residents of the Nicosia district will face a new annual rainwater tax. This was announced by the head of the district administration, Constantinos Yiorkadjis, who emphasized that the measure is necessary for the maintenance and cleaning of the city’s outdated drainage infrastructure.
According to the new rules, the tax will be 0.02% of the assessed value of the property. According to Governor Constantinos Yiorkadjis, “for a property worth €200,000, this would be just €4” (although 0.02% of €200,000 is actually €40). Yiorkadjis assured that the amount is negligible and will not be a burden on citizens.
The tax revenue will go towards the regular maintenance of rainwater collectors, many of which have not been cleaned for decades. The official noted that the deterioration of this infrastructure poses a serious threat to both the urban environment and residents' safety.
Yiorkadjis also explained that previously there was no legal basis for introducing such a charge. However, now that the Nicosia Sewerage Board has been officially granted the necessary powers, the introduction of the tax has become possible.
The new measure has already sparked discussions among city residents, but the authorities are confident that this is a step toward improving urban infrastructure and preventing potential flooding in the future.
