Suspects detained in Paphos arson series
A 41-year-old woman and a 19-year-old man appeared before a court in Paphos, suspected of a series of arsons and other serious crimes.
The court ordered them to be remanded in custody for 8 days pending investigation.
According to police, the individuals are involved in a case covering 12 episodes, including car arsons, attempted arsons, property damage, and participation in a criminal group.
The investigation is considering the theory that the arsons may have been carried out for hire. It is reported that the 19-year-old suspect allegedly received 1,000 euros for participating in one episode, but did not name the client.
The investigation began after police discovered a suspicious vehicle with fake license plates near a previously targeted site. When police attempted to detain them, the suspects fled, leading to a dangerous chase during which they damaged police cars.
The vehicle was later found at a house where the 41-year-old woman was located. She admitted to renting the car but denies involvement in the arsons.
The 19-year-old was detained later; according to police, he resisted arrest and struck an officer.
The investigation is ongoing, as law enforcement officials check for possible links between the suspects and other similar crimes.
