Coastal Erosion Intensifies Again in Paphos Districts
In the coastal areas of Paphos, the problem of shoreline erosion has flared up again, an issue that has affected areas such as Geroskipou, Peyia, and Polis Chrysochous for decades.
According to experts, the cause may be a very rainy winter, which in some cases was accompanied by severe storms that damaged the coast. Other possible causes include unfinished coastal protection projects, including the construction of breakwaters.
The problem recently reappeared in the Polis Chrysochous area. According to previous studies, the shoreline has receded by more than 70 meters in some places over time.
In recent days, specialists re-examined the coast in the Argaka area, as strong storms over the last two months have further worsened the situation.
Earlier, the municipality began implementing a study by the National Technical University of Athens, which involved reinforcing a section of the beach and constructing 14 breakwaters along the coast.
The first phase of the project was carried out with 50% funding from the Municipality of Polis Chrysochous and 50% from the state, with the cost of works amounting to approximately 3.5 million euros.
