Cyprus' Smallest School Now Has Just One Student
The smallest school in Cyprus, located in the village of Kambos, now has only one student. Nine-year-old Demetra Panayiotou, whose three classmates graduated last week, will enter the fourth grade in September.
According to Sotiris, the community mayor, despite the school now having just one student, it will remain open thanks to the intervention of the Minister of Education, Athina Michaelidou, to ensure Demetra can complete her primary education.
In a statement to Alpha TV, the mayor called for student delegations from schools across the island to visit the nine-year-old girl to support her in this challenging situation.
"There are about 400 schools on the island, and if even a small team visited her once a week, it would make a difference," urged the community head.
The mayor stated that the village of Kambos has fought hard to keep the school open. This initiative could serve as an example for other remote schools in rural areas.
"Demetra will now be the only child in the school, but the whole village will support her so she can complete her education. We will do everything necessary," added the mayor.
