More than 500 cases of violence recorded in Cyprus schools during the academic year
In Cyprus schools, 510 cases of violence were registered during the 2024–2025 academic year, according to a report by the Safe School initiative published on Tuesday.
98 educational institutions participated in the study. The highest number of incidents was recorded in high schools — 328 cases, while 108 cases were registered in primary schools, 72 in technical schools, and 2 in kindergartens.
According to the report, physical violence was the most common form — 293 cases. Another 223 cases involved verbal aggression, 24 were cyberbullying, 20 were related to spreading rumors and social isolation, and 16 involved sexual violence.
Most incidents occurred on school grounds — most often in courtyards and classrooms. In 96% of cases, the conflict arose between the students themselves.
Experts note that the main causes of aggression are family problems, social isolation, and adaptation difficulties. Among the measures proposed in the report are training teachers in conflict management, early detection of signs of violence, and strengthening cooperation between schools and parents.
