Authorities on High Alert as Wave of Fires Sweeps Across Cyprus Over the Weekend
Cyprus’ Fire Service and police are on high alert after a surge of fires broke out across the island, particularly in the Paphos and Larnaca regions. In just one day, firefighters responded to 47 blazes, some of which were deemed “suspicious” and potentially dangerous.
According to Fire Service spokesperson Andreas Kettis, emergency teams handled a total of 63 incidents on March 15—47 fires and 16 other emergencies. Six fires, classified as potentially hazardous, were reported in rural areas of Paphos, while 41 others ignited across different parts of the island.
In a post on the X platform, the Fire Service stated that the fires affected dry grass, wild vegetation, trees, as well as garbage dumps and landfills.
Although all the fires were contained in time and no major damage was reported, authorities deemed it necessary to increase police patrols in affected areas. On Sunday, fires reignited in parts of Paphos and Larnaca. Yesterday, officials identified specific locations where fires had broken out, describing them as “suspicious.” Thanks to the swift intervention of firefighters, the flames were quickly brought under control.
In response to the situation, patrols in fire-prone areas will be intensified. Additionally, the Fire Service’s drone unit has been tasked with conducting aerial surveillance over high-risk zones.
Authorities stress that human activity is behind every fire. Residents are urged to take extra precautions and report any suspicious behavior to the authorities immediately.
The Fire Service of the Republic of Cyprus had previously warned about the increased risk of wildfires. According to the Meteorological Department, exceptionally dry conditions are expected to persist across the island until at least March 21. The burning of grass, branches, and waste, as well as lighting any kind of fire, is strictly prohibited.
