Cypriot authorities raise alarm over surge in illegal online casino ads on social media

Cyprus’ National Betting Authority (NBA) has expressed serious concern over a sharp increase in advertisements for illegal online casinos circulating on social media. According to the agency, these platforms operate without a license in the Republic and violate current legislation.
In Cyprus, only a strictly limited form of online gambling is allowed — specifically, sports betting through licensed operators. Online casinos offering games such as roulette, slot machines, or poker are completely banned. Nevertheless, more and more ads containing links to such sites are appearing on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and other popular platforms.
The regulator urges the public to stay alert and avoid clicking on suspicious links. According to NBA representatives, these illegal sites often mislead users by creating the illusion of legality. Behind the flashy appearance, however, lie fraudulent schemes that offer no guarantee of data security or payout of winnings.
Authorities emphasize that only operators with official licenses are permitted to operate legally in Cyprus. A list of these operators is available on the official website of the National Betting Authority.
The regulator plans to strengthen cooperation with social media platforms and international organizations in the near future to block illegal content and hold offenders accountable.
