Cyprus Authorities Approve Recall of Vehicles with Faulty Takata Airbags
The Parliament of the Republic of Cyprus has approved a new law empowering the Minister of Transport to issue orders for the recall of defective vehicles. This legislation comes in response to recent safety concerns surrounding Takata airbags.
The law also grants the Minister the authority to set deadlines for repairing defective vehicles and to suspend roadworthiness certificates for cars with faulty or inappropriate components.
It is anticipated that the current Minister of Transport, Alexis Vafeades, will issue the first recall order on February 3, targeting vehicles equipped with faulty Takata airbags.
Earlier reports indicated that 11,181 Mazda Demio vehicles—one of the best-selling car models on the island—were recalled in Cyprus. These cars are fitted with defective Takata airbags, which have been the focus of a global recall campaign.
To assist affected vehicle owners, the government has launched a dedicated hotline.
The hotline number is 22 747100 and will operate from:
- 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM on weekdays
- 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM on weekends
