Female Police Officer Injured in Football Riots in Larnaca
Violent clashes broke out in Larnaca on Sunday during a football match between local team AEK and Limassol’s AEL. Fans ignited flares, threw stones, and hurled Molotov cocktails, leading to injuries, including a female police officer.
According to law enforcement, the officer sustained a leg injury. To disperse the crowd outside AEK Arena, police used chemical deterrents.
Larnaca police spokesperson Spyros Chrysostomou confirmed that the injured officer was taken to Larnaca General Hospital, where she was diagnosed with shin contusions.
Authorities suspect that fans may have hidden flares and Molotov cocktails outside the stadium beforehand, planning to use them after the match.
Larnaca police have launched an investigation.
