For the first time in Cyprus, a patient received an osseointegrated bionic arm prosthesis after amputation

The American Medical Center in Cyprus performed the country’s first surgery to implant an osseointegrated bionic arm prosthesis.

The patient is a 45-year-old man who lost his left arm above the elbow in a severe motorcycle accident in September 2024.

The surgery took place on November 28, 2025, under the guidance of orthopedic surgeon Dr. Stelios Hadjichristofi. During the procedure, a cylindrical BADAL (press fit) implant base was inserted into the humerus bone, to which the bionic prosthesis will later be attached.

In the coming weeks, doctors will monitor the full integration of the implant into the bone. Gradual load-bearing with increasing weight will follow, after which the patient will receive a permanent bionic forearm and begin training to use the prosthesis.

The surgery was approved by the Ministry of Health. The prosthesis production and three months of preliminary training for the patient were handled by Κέντρο Ορθοπεδικών Εφαρμογών (ΚΕΟ).

After completing all stages of treatment, doctors estimate that the man will be able to significantly improve his independence, regain some lost functionality, and enhance his quality of life.
