CYPRUS' ENTRY INTO THE SCHENGEN ZONE - THE FOREIGN MINISTRY'S PRIORITY FOR 2024
Cyprus' accession to the Schengen Zone and the visa-free program are among the main priorities of the Republic of Cyprus's Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the next year. This was stated by Minister Constantinos Kombos.
Constantinos Kombos presented the budget of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for 2024, amounting to 112 million euros, to the Finance Committee of the House of Representatives.
Presenting the action plan for the years 2023-2024, the minister emphasized that facilitating the resolution of the Cyprus problem remains the number one issue.
The minister also noted that the country's foreign policy revolves around its comparative advantages, including protecting the Republic of Cyprus at all costs, creating favorable conditions for reunification, and utilizing its status as an EU member state at all levels and on all issues. Strengthening Cyprus' "already excellent relations" with regional states aligns with these goals. Cyprus will continue to seek to enhance regional multilateralism through trilateral agreements and a positive international image.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs stressed the need to continue strengthening and defending Cyprus' close ties.
He also stated that to achieve these goals, it is necessary to reform and reorganize the ministry, noting that significant steps have already been taken, and there is a clear plan that needs to be implemented.
The minister also emphasized that Cyprus' upcoming presidency of the EU Council in 2026 is "not only a serious challenge but also significant opportunities."
