Illegal camping may result in imprisonment, Cyprus authorities warn
Cyprus authorities have reminded citizens about the rules of forest camping. This is particularly relevant to areas such as the Akamas National Forest Park.
The Ministry of Agriculture warns that unauthorized camping not only harms nature but may also lead to serious legal consequences.
Camping in state forests without a permit is a legal offense. It is punishable by a fine of up to €5,000 or imprisonment for up to one year. In severe cases, both penalties may be applied.
Authorities in Cyprus believe that illegal campers often leave behind trash and disturb the ecological balance. But the most serious risk, especially during the dry summer months, comes from lighting fires.
According to the 2025 amendment to the Forest Law, starting a fire in state forests or even within two kilometers of their borders may result in imprisonment for up to 12 years, a €100,000 fine, or both.
Authorities remind the public that camping and picnicking in nature is only permitted in specially designated, organized areas. These sites have proper facilities for fire use, food preparation, and waste disposal.
