During the day, almost 200 migrants arrived in Cyprus on three boats
Three boats carrying over 190 migrants arrived in Cyprus within a few hours. The first boat carried 98 migrants, the second arrived with 76 people, and the third brought 23 more undocumented migrants.
On February 25 at 17:50, a wooden boat was spotted 16 nautical miles off Cape Greco, near Larnaca. On board were 98 immigrants from Syria: 57 men, six women, and 35 minors.
On Monday, February 26, around three in the morning, all arrivals were safely transported to Larnaca Port, where their details were recorded. After questioning, authorities arrested a 56-year-old man for organizing illegal immigration.
The day before, he appeared before the Larnaca District Court, which remanded him in custody for 8 days. The remaining 97 migrants were transferred to the "Pournara" Temporary Accommodation Center in Kokkinotrimithia.
Two more boats with migrants were detected yesterday by the radar of the coast and marine police southeast of Cape Greco.
In particular, the first boat was intercepted near Limeniki Harbor at 1:00 in the morning, 8 nautical miles southeast of Cape Greco. The boat carried 76 migrants from Syria: 35 men, 11 women, and 30 children. The migrants were safely brought to Ayia Napa harbor.
During questioning, the migrants reported leaving the Lebanese Tripoli coast on February 25 at 15:00, each paying an unknown person $3000 USD. Authorities began to arrest a 27-year-old man from Syria, who allegedly was the boat's helmsman. The remaining 75 migrants were transferred to the "Pournara" Temporary Accommodation Center in Kokkinotrimithia.
The second boat was spotted around 11:00, nine nautical miles southeast of Cape Greco.
Coast and marine police vessels arrived at the scene and found 23 migrants on board: 15 men, three women, and five children also from Syria. All migrants were safely brought to Ayia Napa harbor.
During questioning, the migrants said they left Tripoli in Lebanon on February 24 at 21:00, paying an unknown person $3500 USD. Police arrested an 18-year-old man, who allegedly was the boat's helmsman. The remaining 22 migrants were transferred to the "Pournara" Temporary Accommodation Center in Kokkinotrimithia.
It is expected that the two arrested individuals, aged 27 and 18, will appear today before the Famagusta District Court in Paralimni.
