3,615 Traffic Offenders Caught During Holiday Season in Cyprus
During the Christmas, New Year, and Epiphany holidays, the Republic of Cyprus police intensified road safety measures and ramped up traffic inspections. Between December 23 and January 6, a total of 3,615 drivers were penalized for various traffic violations.
Key offenses included:
- 1,121 cases of speeding: Drivers exceeding the speed limit, risking their safety and that of others.
- 241 instances of drunk driving: Individuals caught driving under the influence of alcohol.
- 197 drivers not wearing seat belts: A basic but essential safety measure ignored.
- 15 cases of children traveling without car seats: A serious oversight that puts young passengers at risk.
- 41 motorcyclists riding without helmets: Endangering their lives by neglecting protective gear.
- 133 violations involving mobile phones: Distracted driving due to using phones behind the wheel.
- 110 cases of unlicensed driving: Individuals caught operating vehicles without a valid license.
- 326 instances of illegal parking: Violations that contribute to congestion and inconvenience.
In addition to these, vehicle inspections highlighted 134 roadworthiness complaints. The most common issues included:
- 37 cases of faulty headlights, and
- 15 instances of worn-out tires, both critical factors for safe driving.
The police emphasized that their checks will continue across the island to ensure compliance with road safety regulations.
- "Our primary goal is to raise awareness about road safety and encourage responsible behavior among all road users. By doing so, we aim to prevent accidents and enhance overall safety on Cyprus’s roads," stated a police spokesperson.
