In Cyprus, the Office of the Commissioner for Personal Data Protection has begun receiving numerous complaints from citizens regarding unsolicited promotional SMS and phone calls from parliamentary candidates, their campaign headquarters, and political parties.

According to the department, in a number of cases, such messages and calls become too intrusive, and sometimes possible violations of personal data protection legislation are recorded.

It is reported that back in December, the Commissioner's office sent special recommendations to political parties to ensure that candidates and their teams comply with the rules for using citizens' personal data during the election campaign.

The department emphasized that political campaigning must not violate the right of citizens to the protection of their personal information.
