Residents of Limassol are returning home after the hurricane
It is expected that residents of Germasoyia will be able to return to their homes today after the hurricane. Earlier this week, two tornadoes in Limassol forced people to evacuate more than 150 homes.
Speaking on CyBC radio, Germasoyia Mayor Kyriakos Xidias stated that the homes damaged by the hurricane will not be fully repaired, but they will be inhabitable.
According to the mayor, on Friday, "if the weather permits, the registration of all damage will be completed." Municipal service crews and district administration teams continue to clean up debris from homes and roofs.
Recall that more than 150 properties were damaged as a result of two tornadoes that struck the eastern parts of Limassol on Wednesday.
Areas such as Germasoyia and Moutayiaka were particularly hard hit. Roofs were torn off houses, power was cut off, and windows were broken. The storm also affected areas such as Pyrgos, Zakaki, and Moni.
The Limassol district administration has opened a special hotline for those affected by the disaster. A total of 167 calls have been received on it. At the moment, authorities have recorded damage to 156 houses, two apartment buildings, eight commercial properties, 24 cars, and a church.
The Minister of Interior arrived in the disaster area and held a meeting, giving clear instructions to the district administration. Among them is a directive to find housing for families left homeless. According to the minister, after the damage is registered, compensation will be paid to all affected parties.
As a result of the extreme weather, one foreigner was seriously injured. He was transferred from a Limassol general hospital to a Nicosia general hospital in critical condition. The man had fingers amputated from his hand, and he awaits another operation.
Government representative Konstantinos Letymbiotis stated that measures have been taken to ensure that residents stay in hotels if their homes are not in suitable condition after the hurricane.
