Documents Required for Marriage in Northern Cyprus

Updated: 4 days ago

To get married in Northern Cyprus (TRNC), especially if one of the prospective spouses is a foreign citizen, it is necessary to prepare a specific set of documents in advance. The requirements are formalized, and failure to comply with even one of them may result in a refusal to register the marriage.

Documents required for marriage

If one of the prospective spouses is a foreign citizen, the following set of documents is required to register a marriage in Northern Cyprus. Also mandatory is legal residency status in the TRNC — residence permit, work or student visa.

  • Application of intent to marry
  • Valid passports and their copies
  • Birth certificates issued in the country of citizenship
  • Certificates of marital status (single status) from the country of citizenship
  • Divorce certificate, if one of the parties was previously married
  • Residence document (issued by the mukhtar of the place of residence)
  • Health certificate (issued at a TRNC public clinic)
  • Proof of legal residence (residence permit, work or student visa)

All documents must be translated into Turkish and apostilled. As an alternative to an apostille, an officially certified translation at the Turkish embassy in the country of issue is accepted.

Important: the validity period of some certificates (e.g., single status and health certificates) is limited, so it is recommended to prepare documents immediately before submission.

Frequently asked questions about marriage in the TRNC

Is the list of documents the same for TRNC citizens?

Yes, the list is generally similar, but instead of a passport, a TRNC citizen ID card is used, and proof of legal residence is not required.

Can tourists get married in Northern Cyprus?

No. Foreign citizens in the TRNC on a tourist visa are not allowed to register a marriage. A residence permit, work, or student visa is required for this.

Is a marriage performed in the TRNC recognized abroad?

Without undergoing the recognition procedure in a specific country, a marriage conducted in Northern Cyprus is legally valid only within the TRNC. Additional legalization may be required for international recognition.

What if it is not possible to get an apostille?

If obtaining an apostille is impossible, an officially certified translation of the documents at the Turkish embassy in the country of issue is accepted.
