The Butchers' Association demanded that the government address the rising prices of cattle

The Butchers' Association appealed to the government to take measures due to the sharp increase in cattle prices in Northern Cyprus, the organization reported on September 19, 2025.

In a written statement, the association noted that over two months, the prices of live cattle rose by approximately 50%, which affected retail meat prices. To ensure the public's access to meat at reasonable prices, the organization proposed importing animals and planning supplies according to market conditions and needs.

The association stated that it participated in a Council of Ministers meeting by invitation and brought the issue to the attention of Prime Minister Yünal Yüstel and Minister of Economy Olgun Amcaoğlu, providing detailed information to Cabinet members.

According to the association, the number of dairy cows increased, while the number of animals for slaughter significantly decreased. In their assessment, this led to the transfer of feeding, housing, and procurement costs to Southern Cyprus, putting butchers "on the brink of bankruptcy."

Although the butchers agreed to set the price of a young bull (tosun) at 200 Turkish Lira per kilogram, the Union of Animal Producers and Breeders announced a price of 240 Lira on August 2, and within a month the price reached 300 Lira. The association stated that the government has not yet taken action or informed them of measures, and called for urgent intervention.
