Biologists criticize extension of thrush hunting season
The Association of Biologists has reacted to Prime Minister Ünal Üstel's announcement regarding the extension of the thrush (cikla) hunting season (1st small game season), emphasizing that hunting is prohibited by law during the closed season.
In a written statement signed by the association's president, Mustafa Kofalı, it was noted that the current "Hunting and Wildlife Regulation Law" clearly defines hunting seasons:
- Big Game Season — October 15 to January 10;
- 1st Small Game Season — January 1 to March 1;
- 2nd Small Game Season — September 1 to September 30.
All other periods are considered closed seasons.
The organization stressed that the law allows for the reduction or complete cancellation of an open season for conservation reasons, but an extension is not permitted. Specifically, Article 6 of the law expressly prohibits shooting, killing, selling, or capturing wild animals and birds during the closed period.
Biologists stated that the proposed initiative to extend the season until March 15 contradicts scientific and legal principles of nature conservation. They pointed out that spring hunting bans are standard in many countries to protect populations during the breeding season.
The association called on authorities to comply with existing legislation and consider ecosystem sustainability, noting that "wildlife has no voice, so we are duty-bound to protect its interests."
