British Cypriots Urged to Participate in Elections
The National Federation of Cypriots in the United Kingdom has issued a final call to British Cypriots to vote in the elections taking place in the United Kingdom on Thursday, July 4th.
"Ensure your voice is heard on Election Day by voting at the polling stations, and remind your family and friends to do the same," reads the statement published on the eve of the vote.
Former leader of the Labour Party and independent candidate Jeremy Corbyn, along with Christos Karaolis, the head of the National Federation of Cypriots in the UK, specifically addressed British Cypriots.
"British Cypriots have contributed to all aspects of British life, and we must secure our right to vote in the country's future. There is a future where the UK can play a leading role in restarting negotiations for a free, united Cyprus," he said.
It is also noted that many candidates in the elections have made official visits to Cyprus, spoken about Cyprus in Parliament, and attended public events, actively demonstrating their support for a free, united Cyprus.
Polling stations opened today at 7:00 am UK time (9:00 am Cyprus time) and will remain open until 10:00 pm UK time (midnight Cyprus time).
A total of 650 Members of Parliament will be elected in single-member constituencies under the first-past-the-post system, with the candidate receiving the highest number of votes in each constituency becoming its representative.
These UK elections are the first since the country changed its electoral laws, allowing its citizens abroad to vote.
It is estimated that there are currently more than 40,000 British citizens living in Cyprus. Political parties in the country are trying to attract overseas voters to their side.
