In Girne, police detained four young people aged 18–19 whom they believe are linked to the Turkish criminal group Casperler Çetesi. Early in the morning of November 24, they set fire to two cars near a car dealership on Semih Sankar Street.

According to police, two of the suspects poured a flammable liquid on the vehicles and set them on fire. The damage is estimated at £84,000. CCTV cameras recorded the moment of the arson, after which the perpetrators fled toward Doğanköy. During searches, they were found hiding in bushes together with the canister used for the arson.

The other two suspects were arrested later — according to police, they are also involved in the case and resisted arrest. One of them pleaded guilty.

It was established that all four arrived in Northern Cyprus on November 22 on a tourist visa. Law enforcement officers report that the suspects may be linked to the activities of Casperler Çetesi — a group that recruits teenagers into attacks, arson and extortion.

The court extended the detention of all four for three days. The police continue the investigation and are in contact with the Turkish authorities.
