AI-powered traffic cameras will come with two sensors
In Northern Cyprus, preparations are underway to introduce a new system of traffic cameras using artificial intelligence technologies, but its full launch has been postponed for now. These so-called “smart” cameras will not only detect speeding but also monitor other traffic violations.
The main difference of the new system is the presence of a second measuring device. This requirement is based on European Union directives, which mandate the compulsory presence of a second sensor when recording speed. The reason lies in the fact that traditional radars, which operate on electromagnetic waves, are subject to various interferences. As a result, the data obtained may sometimes contain errors, creating grounds for disputes and appeals against fines.
The presence of a second sensor minimizes such risks. Now each violation will be recorded by two independent measuring devices at the same time, ensuring objectivity and transparency of the system. Thus, a driver will not be able to claim that the camera made a mistake, since the violation will be confirmed by the second device.
This practice has long been applied in European countries. There, issuing a fine requires that a speeding violation be confirmed by at least two measurements. This significantly increases trust in the automatic control system and makes the appeal process easier in disputed cases.
In Northern Cyprus, the new system has already undergone testing. According to experts, AI-powered cameras will record not only speeding but also other types of violations: running a red light, using a mobile phone while driving, or failing to comply with parking rules. All this should help improve road discipline and reduce accidents.
The project is expected to be launched after final approval of all technical and legal details.
