Foreign Minister: “The road in Pyla will be built; Çayhan-Düzü is TRNC land”
In Northern Cyprus, discussions surrounding the works in Pyla have intensified following statements by Foreign Minister Tahsin Ertuğruloğlu regarding the road project in the area and the status of the Çayhan-Düzü territory. He appeared on the "Sabah Postası" program on Kıbrıs Postası TV on April 24, according to local press reports.
Ertuğruloğlu noted that the recent tensions in Pyla are linked to external factors, pointing out, among other things, the British presence within structures operating under the UN umbrella. According to him, this explains why issues surrounding the road and access to plots are meeting resistance.
He recalled that Turkish Cypriots have faced protests for many years due to how international structures perceive the problem. The Minister also emphasized that during the construction of the road, peacekeeping forces were physically present on-site, which caused a reaction from workers attempting to cross the section.
At the same time, Ertuğruloğlu declared: "The road in Pyla will ultimately be built." Furthermore, he stressed that Çayhan-Düzü is TRNC land, noting that if it were not "our land," military units would not be deployed to the area.
Separately, he pointed to the importance of a diplomatic approach based on equality and determination, stating that while demanding peace, "one must be prepared to resist."
