Karavas Municipality Denounces Demolition of Historic Buildings

The Municipality of Karavas has issued a sharp statement, expressing "anger and indignation" over the ongoing demolition of historic buildings in the town. Authorities described these as targeted actions directed against the historical memory, cultural heritage, and identity of the region.
According to the statement, it recently became known that the mansion of Grigoris Hadjilambrou, who served as the Mayor of Karavas from 1908 to 1926, was demolished. The municipality emphasized that this is not an isolated incident. Previously, the family home of the late Georgios Poyiatzi (Kontilis) and the mansion of Lefteris Hadjistephanou were also destroyed.
The statement refers to a "conscious attempt to distort and erase the historical presence of the legal residents of Karavas." The municipality underscores that such actions constitute a violation of international law and the principles of cultural heritage protection.
It was further noted that Turkish Cypriot residents of the area are also opposing the destruction, which, according to the municipality, confirms the widespread nature of the problem.
The Municipality of Karavas called on international organizations to intervene and take measures to preserve this historical legacy. In conclusion, it emphasized that residents intend to continue seeking protection for their cultural memory.
