Two Greek Cypriots Detained at Metehan Checkpoint: 3.5g of Cocaine Seized
On February 12, 2026, at the Metehan checkpoint in Lefkoşa, officers from the Narcotics and Smuggling Prevention Department detained two Greek Cypriots — R.Z. (male, 60) and S.S. (female, 41) — as they were entering Northern Cyprus. Both were brought to court on suspicion of cocaine possession, and their detention has been extended for 7 days.
According to police data, around 20:00, during a search of the vehicle driven by R.Z. with S.S. as a passenger, approximately 3.5 grams of a substance presumed to be cocaine were discovered. Electronic scales with suspected drug residue were also seized. All discovered items have been processed as physical evidence.
The suspects were arrested immediately, and an investigation has been launched. Previously, the court granted 3 days of police detention, during which the seized samples were sent for analysis. Police reported that forensic results are pending and additional statements need to be obtained.
During the investigation, it was established that S.S. has an open case regarding the possession of cocaine and methamphetamine registered in Girne. The police requested an extension of the detention period for another 7 days to complete investigative actions; the court granted the request.
Checks at crossing points are conducted as part of regular control. The police are continuing the investigation, and laboratory results are expected for the case.
