Nine Injured in Four Traffic Accidents in Northern Cyprus — Three Involved Drunk Drivers
Nine people were injured in four separate traffic accidents that occurred within a single day in Northern Cyprus. Three of the four drivers involved were under the influence of alcohol, and two have been arrested.
According to a statement from the police press office, the accidents took place on May 1 in Nicosia, Kyrenia, Famagusta, and along the Ercan–İskele highway.
The first accident happened around 6:00 AM on the Nicosia–Famagusta main road. A 29-year-old driver, who was intoxicated, was heading toward Famagusta when he lost control of his vehicle at the Halkbank roundabout. The car hit the central barrier, veered onto the roundabout, then back onto the road, and finally crashed into a metal guardrail. Four people, including the driver, were injured. All were taken to Nicosia State Hospital and discharged after receiving treatment. The investigation is ongoing.
The second incident occurred at approximately 8:00 PM in Kyrenia. A 27-year-old woman, also under the influence, was driving on Bülbüller Street when she crashed into a parked motorcycle, knocking over its rider, who was standing next to it. The injured motorcyclist was initially taken to Dr. Akçiçek Hospital in Kyrenia and later transferred to Nicosia Hospital. The woman was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.
Earlier that day, around 4:30 PM, another accident took place between the 37th and 38th kilometer marks of the Ercan–İskele highway. A 51-year-old driver, also intoxicated, crashed into the rear of a car that was slowing down ahead. The impact forced the second vehicle off the road, where it overturned. Two people were injured and later discharged after treatment at Famagusta State Hospital. The drunk driver was arrested, and police are continuing their investigation.
The fourth accident occurred around 6:00 PM in the Glapsides Park area of Famagusta. A 25-year-old woman lost control of her car while driving through a parking area, and the vehicle plunged into a pond approximately 1.5 meters deep. Fortunately, no one was injured in this incident.
