A week on TRNC roads: 50 accidents and thousands of traffic violations
Northern Cyprus police published traffic accident statistics for the period from April 27 to May 3, 2026. During this time, 50 accidents occurred in the country, 15 of which involved injuries, and 35 resulted only in material damage. As a result of the accidents, 21 people were injured.
The main causes of the accidents were speeding (18 cases), careless driving (13), failure to yield at intersections (9), and tailgating (7). The total material damage from the incidents amounted to more than 2.7 million Turkish Liras.
By region, the highest number of accidents was recorded in Girne (14), followed by Lefkoşa (13) and Famagusta (12). There were 6 accidents in Iskele and 5 in Güzelyurt.
In parallel, the police conducted large-scale road checks: 14,839 drivers were inspected. As a result, 2,589 violators were identified, against whom legal proceedings were initiated.
The most frequent violations were speeding (991 cases), using a mobile phone while driving, driving without a seat belt, and failure to obey road signs. Cases of driving under the influence, driving without a license or insurance were also recorded.
During the raids, 209 vehicles were confiscated, and 10 drivers were arrested. The police emphasized that such checks will continue to improve road safety and reduce the number of accidents.
