An informal trilateral meeting involving the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus will take place in New York, according to the United Nations (UN) spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric. He made the announcement during the daily press briefing for UN Secretary-General António Guterres.

Dujarric reminded the press that Guterres had previously held separate bilateral meetings with Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar and the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides.

The UN Secretary-General has invited both sides to informal consultations in October, where the aim is to discuss potential solutions to the long-standing Cyprus issue.

Dujarric confirmed that both sides had agreed to attend the informal trilateral meeting, which is likely to be held in New York.

Earlier, it was reported that Ersin Tatar, President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, had returned from New York, where he attended the 79th session of the UN General Assembly. Upon his arrival at Ercan Airport, Tatar held a press conference where he shared details of his meeting with António Guterres. He also confirmed that he had agreed to participate in an informal trilateral dinner with the President of the Republic of Cyprus.
