UN Informs Both Cypriot Communities About Upcoming Geneva Meeting

The office of the UN Secretary-General has contacted the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus to inform them about an informal "5+1" conference scheduled to take place in Geneva on March 17–18. An official invitation and a statement from the UN are expected later this week.

On Monday evening, the UN notified Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar and Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides about the upcoming meeting. According to local media reports, the summit will begin at noon on March 17 at the Palais des Nations in Geneva and will conclude the following evening.

The meeting will be chaired by UN Secretary-General António Guterres.

The "5+1" format includes representatives from the Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot sides, as well as the three guarantor countries of Cyprus—Turkey, Greece, and the United Kingdom. The Geneva meeting is seen as a crucial step in discussions on the Cyprus issue, as it will be the first high-level engagement of its kind in four and a half years.

Reports also indicate that Greek Cypriot political parties will closely follow the summit from Geneva.
